Wedding Planning in North Macedonia: 12-Month Timeline

A wedding in North Macedonia is rarely a party for fifty. A typical celebration gathers 150 to 350 guests, the restaurant is hall, kitchen and stage at once, and the best Saturdays from May to October go almost a year ahead. Planning is not a wish list — it is an order of decisions, month by month, from the engagement to the morning after.

Where do you start after getting engaged?

Start with three numbers before anything else: your total budget, a rough guest count, and the month you want to marry in. Those three decisions determine the restaurant, and the restaurant then determines almost everything else — the date, the menu, the decor, even how many photographers you need.

The order that works in the first weeks:

• Talk money before you talk style. Who contributes what — the two of you, your parents, theirs — and whether it is a fixed amount or a vague promise. Write it down.
• A first draft of the guest list. Write it separately: yours, theirs. Merge the two and you will see why the number jumps. Guest lists here almost never shrink, so plan with a 10% buffer.
• A month and a backup date. Do not lock onto a single date before you call the restaurants. Two or three possible Saturdays give you negotiating room.
• Your kum and kuma. Ask the wedding godparents early, before the news reaches social media. The role carries real cost and deserves a calm conversation.

When should you book the restaurant?

Book the restaurant 10 to 12 months ahead if you want a Saturday between May and October. In Skopje, Ohrid and Bitola the most sought-after halls for 200-plus guests close out their summer Saturdays nearly a year before the date. For a Sunday, a Friday or an off-season slot, six months is usually enough.

Your restaurant contract should spell out: price per guest and what it includes, whether drinks are unlimited or charged by consumption, the price for children and for your crew (photographer, videographer and band eat there), deposit and cancellation terms, the hour the music stops and the price of each extra hour. What does the month-by-month timeline look like?

Twelve months sounds like a lot, but you have roughly six months of active work and six months of waiting for confirmations. Split the year into blocks: venue and date first, then the people who shoot and play, then the look, and logistics last. Never skip backwards — each block depends on the one before it.

12–10 months out

• Lock the budget, guest list and two possible dates.
• Visit three to five restaurants with the same set of questions.
• Sign the contract and pay the deposit.
• Ask your kum and kuma.

9–7 months out

• Book the photographer and videographer. Ask to see one full wedding, not a highlight reel.
• Book the band or DJ. Tapan and zurla players for the procession are a separate booking.
• If you are marrying in a church or mosque, agree the slot with the priest or imam.
• Start dress fittings. A made-to-order dress is ordered now.

6–5 months out

• Choose the groom's suit and the outfits for the kum and dever.
• Agree the decorator and the look of the hall, with photos of past weddings there.
• Reserve rooms for guests coming from other cities and abroad.
• Open a separate account or envelope for wedding costs and log every payment.

4–3 months out

• Finalise invitation design and printing. Invitations go out 8–10 weeks before the wedding.
• Order the cake and the dessert table.
• Book hair and make-up, with a trial.
• Arrange transport: a car for the couple and a van for the procession.
• If you are building a wedding website with RSVP, launch it with the invitations.

2 months out

• File the marriage application at the registry office.
• Buy the rings — engraving takes two to three weeks.
• Do the menu tasting.
• Collect RSVPs and start the seating plan.
• Book the honeymoon.

1 month out

• Try the dress on with the shoes and jewellery you will wear.
• Give the photographer a list of ten must-have shots — grandparents, older relatives.
• Agree the song order with the band: entrance, first dance, oro.
• Confirm arrival times with every supplier.

The week before

• Send the final headcount to the restaurant.
• Pack a day-of box: thread, pins, plasters, spare tights, charger, water, painkillers.
• Go to bed early at least two nights before.

The wedding day

The morning starts with hair and make-up for the bride and dressing for the groom, usually four to five hours before the ceremony. Then comes the fetching of the bride at her family home, with a procession, music and each family's customs. Registry office and church follow, then location photos, then the restaurant entrance around eight in the evening. First dance, dinner, cake, oro until morning.

• Leave thirty empty minutes between every item. Every wedding runs late.
• Appoint one person to pay suppliers and answer the phone. Not the kum — he is busy.
• Eat something in the morning. Everyone skips this and everyone regrets it.

The day after

• Return anything rented — dress, suits, decor — usually within 48 hours.
• Gather the gifts and envelopes in one place, with one person as a witness.
• If you are changing your surname, start with the new ID card, then passport, bank and employer.

How much should you set aside, and when do you pay?

The menu is the biggest line: budget 1,800–3,500 MKD (30–57 EUR) per guest in 2026, depending on the city and the type of restaurant. For 250 guests that is 450,000–875,000 MKD (7,300–14,200 EUR) for the venue alone, before photography, music or clothes. Everything else is added around that number.

Typical 2026 ranges from vendor listings:

• Photographer, full day: 40,000–100,000 MKD (650–1,630 EUR)
• Video: 40,000–90,000 MKD (650–1,460 EUR)
• Band: 50,000–120,000 MKD (810–1,950 EUR); DJ: 20,000–45,000 MKD (325–730 EUR)
• Tapan and zurla for the procession: 12,000–25,000 MKD (195–410 EUR)
• Hall decoration: 30,000–120,000 MKD (490–1,950 EUR)
• Bridal hair and make-up: 6,000–15,000 MKD (100–245 EUR)
• Wedding cake: 4,000–12,000 MKD (65–195 EUR)
• Transport for the couple: 8,000–20,000 MKD (130–325 EUR)

The payment rhythm is almost always the same: a 10–20% deposit on signing, the balance seven to fourteen days before or in an envelope on the day. Agree it in advance and write it down.

How do you book the civil ceremony and the church wedding?

The civil marriage is filed in person, by both of you, at the registry office (Управа за водење на матичните книги) in the municipality where you want to marry. Bring valid ID and your birth certificates. The registrar offers you the nearest free slot, so apply at least two months ahead for a Saturday.

A few things that regularly surprise couples:

• A ceremony away from the registry office. Many municipalities let the registrar come to a restaurant or another location, but it takes a separate request and an extra fee. Conditions vary.
• Witnesses. You need two adult witnesses with ID cards. Usually the kum and kuma, but it does not have to be them.
• A foreign national. If one of you is not a Macedonian citizen, documents must be translated and certified and a certificate of no impediment is required. Start three months ahead.
• A church wedding. Arrange it with the priest in your parish. Weddings are not performed during fasting periods or certain feast days, which narrows your dates — check before locking the restaurant.
• A nikah at the mosque. Agree the slot with the imam and check which documents are needed. The order relative to the civil ceremony is settled in advance.

Do not pay a restaurant deposit until you know your date works for the church or mosque too.

What do the kum, kuma and star svat actually do?

The kum and kuma are witnesses and hosts at once. They stand beside you at the ceremony, often pay for the cake or part of the decor, and are the first people guests approach. The star svat runs the order of the day — the procession, the sequence of customs, and who enters the hall when.

When to ask, and what to say:

• Kum and kuma — 10 to 12 months out. Be explicit about what you expect financially.
• Star svat — about six months out. Usually an older relative who knows both families' customs.
• Dever and deverica (the couple's attendants) — three months out. They are the practical help on the day.
• Give all of them one printed sheet with the schedule and phone numbers. It is the difference between a wedding that flows and one that waits.

If the families keep different customs, settle now which you follow and which you skip — not on the morning itself.

What has to be done in the last two weeks?

The last two weeks are for confirmations, not new decisions. Anything not agreed by then will probably not happen. Run through this list seven to ten days before the date and you remove most of the stress from the final week.

• Final headcount sent to the restaurant
• Seating plan with names, printed twice
• Arrival times confirmed with photographer, videographer, band, decorator, transport
• Supplier envelopes prepared and handed to the person in charge
• Dress and suit fittings finished, shoes broken in
